The Death of Franklin B. Gowen, 1889
This is a photocopy of news articles from NY, Phila and Washington, DC on the apparent suicide of
Franklin B. Gowen, the ex-President of the Reading Railroad, after having been found dead in his hotel
room in Wormley's Hotel in Washington on December 13, 1889
Franklin B. Gowen was instrumental in the ultimate destruction of the Molly Maguire organization in the late 1870's.
Included is what appears to be a copy of the Phila Inquirer news reporter's typewritten account in preparation to go to print.
Other articles prepared for print included: "Mr. Gowen's Career";
"Sold Mr. Gowen the Revolver";
"Gowen a complete monopolist";
"Gowen as Ruthless with Competitors as with Unions";
"Death of the Union, Really How Gowen Smashed It";
apparently the reporter included reprints from articles in 1861
about Gowen's activity in anti-unionism and describing the big miners' strike in 1875.
Very good accounts of the coal operators and miners difficulties of the time.
There is an article titled "Had Gowen a Double?",
in which an ex-Mollly Maguire alleges that Molly Maguires
had followed Gowen for years in an attempt to avenge their organization, with Gowen allegedly having hired
a body double, in order to prevent his assassination.
Also included is a "Letter to the Editor", undated, in which the writer, "Ex-Coal Miner" comments on a
previous Girard article on the Molly Maguires, bringing back a flood of memories.
He gave his recollections of the murder of John P. Jones, and having known Jones, Morgan Powell,
and reputed Molly Maguires Thomas Fisher, Alexander Campbell, and Hugh McGehan,
and knowing Jimmy Kerrigan by sight.
The article was signed "Ex-Coal Miner, Philadelphia, August 23" no year given.
